FAQ

Sauna

How should a sauna be cleaned?

Damp mop the floor as needed. Clean the benches with a mild soap applied using a wet cloth. To remove perspiration stains from the wall boards, light sanding with 120-grit sandpaper may be required periodically. To keep the room looking its best, always lay or sit on towels. Apply sauna wood oil periodically to refurbish the wood, especially in commercial applications.

Is operating a sauna expensive?

Heat up time is fast-about 30 minutes-and the Sauna is only on when being used, unlike spas. The average home Sauna costs as little as $3 per month to operate, when used for an hour 3 times a week.

Which types of wood are best for sauna construction?

Western Red Cedar is the preferred wood for saunas. Nordic spruce and aspen are also excellent choices, but they are not as practical for commercial applications because the light-colored wood makes it more difficult to keep clean.

How hot can a sauna get?

All of our electric sauna heaters carry a UL listing, which mandates that the maximum temperature for electric sauna heaters in a 7-foot-high room be 194°F at ceiling level.ed questions.

Technical

Where can a sauna be installed?

A sauna can be placed anywhere you have space—inside or outside. All you need is an easy-to-clean, waterproof floor, a 220/240V electrical hookup for the heater, and ideally, a nearby shower for convenience. Health clubs, hotels, motels, master bathrooms, garages, patios, decks, and basements are all ideal locations for saunas.

Do Scandia Sauna Kits come with vent kits?

No, in many instances, where the heater is placed by the door, a vent is typically not necessary. However, if the heater is located in an area of the room away from fresh air, we recommend planning for ventilation.

Do I need to have a room kit with an outdoor unit?

Yes, you need to provide some type of roof protection for an outdoor sauna. We offer roof kits for all models as an option, but you can also design your own roof. It is important to have some sort of roof to protect the sauna from the elements.

Is a floor drain necessary?

Commercial saunas should have a floor drain to remove excess water from bathers and for cleaning purposes. Most residential saunas do not require a floor drain unless a water hose is used for cleaning.

Can excessive wind affect the standing pilot on the Scandia Gas Sauna Heater?

Yes, in rare occasions, strong winds can blow out the pilot light. This issue can be easily resolved by placing a small piece of screen on the inside of the intake cover. The screen will block excessive wind without negatively affecting the airflow of the heater.

If the pilot light goes out (or gets blown out) on the Scandia Gas Sauna Heater, does it turn off the flow of gas?

Yes, if the pilot light goes out for any reason, the gas valve will automatically shut off the gas. This is a standard feature of the Scandia standing pilot version gas heaters. The Scandia piezo-controlled sauna heaters light the pilot electronically on demand, making them impervious to wind conditions.
